Gran Guitar Quintet
Gran Guitar Quintet consists of five highly talented guitarists from Seoul, Korea. In 2010, Sung Jin Kim founded the group, naming it Grand Guitar Quintet in 2012. Later it became the core group of the Gran Guitar Ensemble. The instrumentation of the quintet is four classical guitars and one contrabass guitar, a unique combination among guitar ensembles in the world.
Gran Guitar Quintet has performed extensively throughout Asia, and each member is a regular guest and jury member at international festivals and competitions. The current membersare Sung Jin Kim, Phillip Chung, Seong Jun Lee, Soo Jin Lee, and Han Na Kim. They are also the senior leaders of the Gran Guitar Ensemble. Both their expressive interpretations of all kinds of compositions and their technical mastery have been praised by critics in many music magazines and newspapers in Korea and Japan.
As a passionate advocate of new music, Gran Guitar Quintet premieres compositions, makes their own transcriptions, and initiates creative projects such as the Concert for One Hundred Guitarists (with Gran Guitar Ensemble). The quintet has interpreted a vast array of repertoire, ranging from Renaissance, Baroque, and Spanish music to tango, jazz, and film music. Besides having an intensive concert schedule in prestigious halls, Gran Guitar Quintet holds charity concerts to share their musical talent with people in need. For example, their concerts in Tokyo and Yokohama, Japan helped people suffering from the earthquake in 2013.
